Years History
About Us
Be part of us, established 1974
Started by Raymond Curtis and still going stronger than ever!
-
Beginning
In 1974, Raymond and Eve Curtis had a vision. They met with Arthur Creedy at the Beaudesert Arts Council. At that time, there was no instrumental music in Queensland state schools, and to address this gap, Arthur Creedy was appointed Director of Cultural Activities for the Queensland Government. He provided a $300 grant to establish the Tamborine Mountain Youth Orchestra. Rehearsals began late in 1974 with just three players, under the baton of Raymond Curtis.
-
Boost
The orchestra received a significant boost when Leon and Joan Hughes moved to the mountain in early 1975. Everyone in their family played music, adding a flute, clarinet, violin, viola, harp, French horn, and cello to the orchestra!

Recent Years
In recent years, TMO has moved to the State High School with a dedicated stage and air-conditioning! We've embarked on some exciting projects, including two combined concerts with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Our orchestra continues to grow welcoming talented new musicians, but we are always looking for more! Having recently celebrated our 50th anniversary, we look forward to the next 50 years of making music together.

May 2021
Our first collaboration with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, working together with 12 QSO musicians, the Tamborine Mountain State High School Wind Symphony and our very own TMO resulting in a magnificent concert with 70 people on stage!

We had a ball! Music all the way. It was great to be entertained by the marvellous QSO Connect. They were amazing. Thank you, Andrew, (Heading-Knight) for writing such a beautiful piece of music, "Jambreen", we all loved playing it; so emotive.
